Arts, Humanities, and Historic Preservation


The regular meeting of the Sauk County Arts, Humanities and Historic Preservation Committee was called to order and certification of Open Meeting compliance was given at 1:00 p.m. by Dorothy Williams.

Members present: Arthur Carlson, Carol Sorg, Dorothy Williams, Valerie McAuliffe, Lola Huber, John Bernien

Members absent: Henry Netzinger

Others present: Kathy Schauf, Rodney Williams, Peter Shrake, Larry Fisher, Bonnie Lueck, Paul Endres, Gene Wiegand, Allan and Nancy Schmidd, Robert Dewel, Scott Alexander, Scott De Laruelle

The minutes of the prior meeting were approved on a motion by Carlson, second by Huber, and an unanimous vote of the Committee. The agenda was approved on a motion by Bernien, second by Carlson, and an unanimous vote of the Committee.

Public Appearances/Public Comment

The Sauk County Art Association will be holding its annual member show at the Ringling Gallery, beginning Saturday March 13, for five days, with an opening reception from 4-7 p.m. Theme: Sauk Seasons.

Communications

A reminder that Arts Day in Madison is March 3, 2004.

June 30, 2004 will be the debut of Oh Wisconsin, Land of my Dreams, the orchestral piece which was funding through the AHHP committee. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra will be debuting this piece at the Concerts on the Square in Madison.

Nancy Piedelstien will be showing her work entitled "Pairs", at the Ringling Gallery from February 7-23, 2004.

The Wisconsin Historic Preservation Commission will be holding its spring meeting on Saturday, April 24, 2004 in Portage. Cost is $25 for members.

Paula Bunch will be displaying her work Hands in the Wind at the James Schwalbach Gallery from February 20-March 18, 2004. Artist reception will be from 5-7 p.m. On Friday February 20, 2004.

The Badger History Group will be holding a meeting on February 24, 2004 (7:00 p.m.) at Park Hall to share their thoughts and plans for Badger.

Business Items:

Consideration of sponsorship of Circus World Museum's Parade and Festival.

Larry Fischer and Bonnie Lueck of Circus World Museum presented facts regarding the plans involved for the four day circus festival and parade in Baraboo. This included details regarding participation by nonprofits in the county, anticipated revenues, historic and cultural significance. Motion by Carlson, second by McAuliffe to approve sponsorship in the amount of $10,000 for the Circus World Museum Parade and Festival, with a request for funding from contingency in a resolution to be forwarded to Finance and the County Board. Motion carried.

Consideration of web site registry of artists.

Discussion over expansion of existing web site to include a directory highlighting the work of local artist, and another highlighting historic properties in the county. Policy was reviewed and approved by the MIS Committee.

A press release will be forthcoming, and the brochure has been amended to include information regarding this opportunity.

Motion by Carlson, second by McAuliffe to proceed with the creation of the artists registry on the Sauk County Web site. Motion carried.

Updates:

The subcommittee preparing for the 100 year celebration for the Sauk County Courthouse is continuing with research. It is hoped that by May a more solid plan of activities as well as a decision on whom to involve will be prepared.

Motion by Carlson, second by McAuliffe to approve vouchers in the amount of $147.82.
Motion carried.

Meeting adjourned on a motion by Bernien, seconded by McAuliffe, with an unanimous committee vote.
Next meeting date was set for 1:00 p.m. on March 12, 2004, in room 213 of the West Square Building.
