Business Items:
Discussion and consideration of recommendation relating to jail space and housing of out-of-county prisoners, including Unit A.
Dane County Sheriff Hamblin spoke regarding overcrowding in the Dane County jail, and implications for Sauk County. Dane County currently contracts with Sauk County for 30 beds at $47.00 per day. They also currently have another 30 prisoners at Sauk County at a rate of $49.00 per day. Although cautioning that he would have to work with his County Board prior to making any commitments, Sheriff Hamblin indicated that Dane County would likely be able to contract for 40 to 45 beds, in addition to the 30 beds already contracted.
Discussion surrounded the investigation of the usage that other counties would make of beds if they were available. Sheriff Stammen was directed to investigate the demand for beds by other counties.
Meeting adjourned on a motion by Hartje, seconded by Endres, with an unanimous committee vote. Next meeting date to be March 8, 2005 as long as Sheriff Stammen is able to receive adequate input from surrounding counties regarding the usage of Sauk County beds.
Respectfully Submitted,
Joan Fordham
Finance Committee Secretary
