of $2,640.57.

Paul Dietmann reported that Sauk County will be receiving a $10,000 grant that is being transferred from Columbia County. Laura Paine had received the grant from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) for a project that she and Paul were working on together to help dairy grazers develop products made from grass-based milk, but since she is no longer the Columbia County Ag Agent and is now employed by DATCP, she is unable to administer the grant.
It was reported that there were five (5) very good applications received for the Alice in Dairyland scholarship this year, however, the selection committee recommended Cathy Jo Luck and Amanda Sandmire to each receive a $250 scholarship. Motion by Zowin, second by Cassity to approve Cathy Jo Luck and Amanda Sandmire to receive scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year. Motion approved with Jerry Lehman abstaining due to the fact that Cathy Jo Luck is his niece.
Paul Dietmann will contact Kathy Schauf to get an item put on the July County Board agenda to have the scholarships presented before the full County Board.
Paul Dietmann received the timeline for the budget and reported to the committee that the preliminary line item request will not have to be approved until the August Ag & Extension committee meeting with final approval being needed in September, therefore, there is no action needed at this time.
The WACEC District 2 Summer Meeting will be in Dane County on August 15th. Sue Nagelkerk and Lester Wiese indicated that they will be attending the meeting. Lynn will contact Linda Borleske to see if she is available to attend also and then will get the registration sent in to the Southern District office by July 31st.
Jenny Erickson presented a project that she is working on with the City of Baraboo that is being funded by a grant from the Department of Commerce "Forward America" program to look at redeveloping property along the Baraboo River, especially the current Alliant Energy property and Servo Instruments. Ed Gieck, Baraboo City Administrator, Karna Hanna, Sauk Count Development Corporation, Pat Hamilton, Baraboo Community Development Authority, and two specialists from UW Madison are working on the design and the engineering of the the project while Jenny will be working on an evaluation of how the project worked.
Sue Nagelkerk had committee members pair up and play the Tic-Tac-Know game that will be presented at the HCE Food Safety display booth at the fair. She presented committee members with a food thermometer like the ones that the game winners will receive at the fair for answering questions correctly.
The 4th of July Witwen parade was well attended this year - the Blackhawk Church served 1900 chicken dinners and ran out of everything.
The Sauk County Fair is coming. The number of entries is down
in Dairy, but there is the addition of the Goat project
this year.
State Fair animals have been selected and it was noted that
there are more colored breeds attending than usual.
Lester Wiese gave a report on the state WACEC meeting that
was held in Oshkosh. Lester met the new Chancellor, David
Wilson, and toured a robotic milking parlor.
Paul and Julie Dietmann had a baby boy in June.
Bob Leopold will be leaving 4-H and the Ag & Extension Advisory Board in September for health reasons.
Bob has a list of names for possible replacements for him,
however, the Ag & Extension Education Committee would like each citizen
group to determine who their representative should be.
The committee may need to develop more structure for the Advisory
Board selection process.
A request was made to bring the document that Paul Dietmann
drafted in 2003 to the next Ag & Extension Education Committee meeting.
Sue Nagelkerk reported that the Sauk County UW Extension Office applied for and received a $1500 grant for Latino programming. Through discussions with Lori Martin, the English as a Second Language teacher for the Sauk Prairie School District, it was decided that we should build a soccer field at or near Bluffview to provide a place for Latino children to run and play in the hopes that the Latino population will then start to build a trust of UW Extension for future programming.
