Dean's Report:

Dean Pleger reported on the following items:

Discussion on Living and Learning Center:

Chairperson Wedekind informed Commission members a meeting had taken place between he and representatives from the City and County, as well as Dean Pleger and C. Davis, at which future plans of the Living and Learning Center were discussed. Both he and Sauk County Administrative Coordinator, K. Schauf, felt the meeting was positive; however work and research needs to be accomplished regarding an updated timeline and plan for the project.

Dean Pleger also spoke well of the meeting, highlighting the following areas which will need to be presented and brought forward to the Campus Commission for action:

timeline for the project, fund raising details, plans for actual construction, and models of operation for the facility. It was suggested the foregoing items be discussed at a special meeting of the Campus Commission, to be held prior to presentation to the City and County for consideration, presumably in September. Commission member Huffaker asked that the Living and Learning Center Building Committee take part in the planning and presentation of this material. Dean Pleger noted he also is planning to bring in a senior administrator from the state level for assistance.

Discussion of Policy Regarding the Naming of Buildings on Campus and Possible Resolution:

Dean Pleger distributed copies of information he received from the Madison campus entitled, "Naming or Dedicating of University Facilities". The policy states, "If the request involves a living individual who has been formally associated with the University of Wisconsin, or has held a paid public office, a waiting period is required unless a situation is presented where a gift stipulates the naming. Normally, at least five years must have elapsed from the time a person who has been formally associated with the University of Wisconsin System, or has held a paid public office, has terminated that association, or left the paid public office".

Discussion followed and several Commission members questioned if this policy applied to local campuses. Dean Pleger has posed this question to the Madison office and is currently awaiting a response. Consensus of Commission members was to wait until an answer to this inquiry is received before proceeding.

It was noted the next meeting of the Sauk County Board of Supervisors will be held on Tuesday, September 19th, with agenda items being due in the County Clerk's Office no later than Monday, September 11th. Given that fact, motion was made by Mielke, seconded by Geimer to adjourn and set a special meeting of the Campus Commission for Thursday, September 7, 2006 at 9:00 A.M. Motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 9:20 A.M.
Motion carried.

Respectfully submitted: Beverly J. Mielke, Sauk County Clerk, Secretary
