February 7, 2018
Board Members present: Judy Ashford, Sue Meise, Barbara Morford, Terrance Slack, Pat Andreessen, and David Wernick
Librarians present: Jennifer Endres Way, Nicholas Studnicka, Sue Kucher, Emily Judd, and Katie Schofield
! Judy Ashford called the meeting to order and verified compliance with the open meeting law at 9:00.
2. Andreessen moved and Morford seconded to adopt the agenda. Passed unanimously.
3. Meise moved to accept the minutes from the November 29th 2017 board meeting . Seconded by Slack. Passed unanimously.
4. Election of Officers: Meise nominated Dave Wernecke, seconded by Morford. Nominations closed and passed unanimously. Vote taken and Dave Wernecke is new Sauk Co. Library Board president.
Morford nominated Sue Meise to stay on as Vice President, second by Terry Slack. Voting closed and passed unanimously. Vote taken and Sue Meise is the acting Vice president.
Morford nominated Peggy Heidenreich to continue as Secretary, seconded by Meise. Nominations closed and passed unanimously. Vote taken and Peggy Heidenreich is the Sauk County Br. Secretary.
5. Annual Calendar was reviewed. Concerns were brought up and Martha Van Pelt will co-ordinate changes to resource library.
6. The Library Service Plan for 2016 -2020 was reviewed and #4 was stroke. No. 1.1 was questioned. At our next meeting we will vote on this policy.
7. Bylaws were reviewed and NO action was needed.
8. Marty Van Pelt, SCLS Director gave her report. Looking at the system:
April 2nd work group service models were set up. Then 10 steering committees were set up to see what to implement. They now are seeking applications to review the models. They will need 45 people to help with a two day retreat .
Additional System Aid: There are 16 systems in State.
So. Central received $68,698.00 to use for Workforce development and Broadband. Four libraries have already began working with Tammra Ramsky on media linking.
9. Library Reports:
Plain: Library closed Jan 24-25 while the interior was being painted. Painters worked 23-26. The large chandleries in library were converted to LED. Each has 9 bulbs. Senior movie is going well, with next movie, Wonder, on Feb. 22.
With the December movie was a traditional Christmas lunch: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, mixed veg., apple crisp, and dinner roll.
Story hour is ongoing Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. with other children’s programing accruing about every two weeks.
They are working on the library’s strategic plan, they have completed a survey and are working on the mechanics of distributing it as widely as possible. Nick has finished the annual report and just needs library board approval and signature to be done.
Rock Springs: Christmas movie was The Goonies. Some classes were canceled because of bad weather. Kari Walker, a student in Culinary Arts Program at MATC and co-owner of Touchdown Tavern taught a Kitchen Class in January –Making Guinness Chocolate Mousse. Story time increased from 2 to 12 thanks to Facebook and word of mouth. They applied for two Arts Grants. Upcoming, March 15 –Iceland- Land or Fire, Ice and Vikings. A slide show by Jan and Carolyne Aslaksen .
LaValle: Had visits by an author and by Santa. Working on Summer Library program, digital plan project, and photo collections.
Sauk City : Recently added digital service Hoopla for downloadable movies, music, e-books and audiobooks. So far the response has been positive. Patrons like that there are no wait times. They have kept the limit at 6 check-outs for now because it is a charge per use model. The Friends of the Library have extended free taxi rides to the library. Several people have taken advantage of this service. They have partnered with the Food Pantry to distribute tickets. Recent programs: Wisconsin Homeschooling 101, New Tech Drop-in Days, Book Club- Little Book of Hygge, Cookbook Club-Whole 360,and Valentine Card Making Class for Adults. Upcoming programs: Indoor Winter Olympics, Lil’ Sweethearts Dance, Art Studio, Friends of Library Fundraising Concert-The Jacks, Fri. 3/9 6-8pm., and Wisconsin Lighthouses, Tues. 3/20 2p.m.
Baraboo: In January they met with MSA and Quinn Evans on Building Renovation. They did a very successful fundraiser called Very Un-birthday Party with costumes and decorations. They received a Sauk Co. Good Ideas grant. Speaker program given with Patricia O’Connell the author, which was well attended
Prairie du Sac: Program highlights were Great Sauk State Trail has opened next to library. Nice opportunity to walk or bike to the library. First Steps in Music and movement program resumes in Jan. for ages 3 and up featuring a wide repertoire of age app. Musical activities, songs, rhymes, movement and playing of simple instruments, as well as a weekly Song Tale. This promotes the development of early literacy skills, socialization skills and their ability to follow directions. 1/30/18 Hearts and Flowers: needle Felting with valentine Theme, 1/216/18 Family Mysteries with local authors: Rose Bingham and Doris Green. 1/05/18 Staff In-service day was held. 12/12/17 Teen DIY gifts program. 12/11/17 Hot Drinks for Adults. Upcoming: Friends of Library, Team Trivia Challenge & Raffle (2/17/18). Teens Tuesday: Frushi & Karaoke (2/8/18). Young Child CPR, Choking & Pediatric First Aid (2/8/18). Teens Tuesday: Hardware Store Accessories (2/13/18) Create accessories out of hardware store material. Crafting Kindness: Humane Society for High School Students (2/20/18) Make pet toys and supplies for Humane Society. Hometown Habitat Film Screening (2/22/18). Canvases & Cookies (2/27/18) For children and parents to paint canvases together. Continuing monthly Chess Club, Lego building Club, and R.E.A.D. to a Dog.
Reedsburg: Celebrated 20 year anniversary with an Open House with refreshments, tours, database and local history demos. They shared their new STEAM learning activity cart. The Friends group supplied prizes including an I-Pad. They had a harpist, Shari Sarazin, in Library for the event.
Space needs suggests they need 13,298 sq. feet additional space, for programming, collections, workspaces and storage. They are working with City Council, City Staff, and other members of the comm. To review the report and implications on the city’s future.
On Feb. 19th the staff will tour by bus to see 5 other libraries. The staff will check out staffing, resources and workflows at other libraries in SCLS and WRLS. Library will be closed of course.
Scanning project is going well. SCLS is scanning books while their staff & volunteers scan the photos & surveys. They hope to have metadata underway in February.
Wonder week is 2/18 -2/24. Reedsburg is hosting a community read for Jan/Feb. & will be showing the movie 4 times during that week., Including their Friends Sponsored Movie & a meal 2/23 @11:30.
Spring Green: Carrie could not join us because her husband had a bad accident, so Sue Meise spoke for Spring Green.
December the Friends of the Library had Bake and Book Sale connected with Country Christmas Quilt Show. Also 10 minute Play Writing Workshop (sponsored by the Friends). Movie Night for Families , Anime Night for Teens and Lego/Minecraft Club.
January, Sharing Family History w/ Doris Green, Winter Stargazing w/John Heasley, Lego/ Mindcraft Club and Pokemon Trainers Club.
February will be Friends of the Library Chocolate Lab (fund raiser), and make and Take Valentines. Spring Green has a new Youth Services Librarian, Christi Makos. Toddler Tuesday Storytime and Wednesday PreSchool Storytime are back in full swing, with great attendance for both.
Next meeting will be May 8th in Sauk City at 9:00. Motion to adjourn by Terry Slack and seconded by Barbara Morford. Voted on and passed.
