Welcome to Land Resources and Environment

The Land Resources and Environment Department is made up of three service areas:

  • Land Conservation
  • Parks and Recreation
  • Planning and Zoning

These three areas work together to protect and enhance the natural, cultural, and historic resources of Sauk County.

In 2022, the LRE Department adopted a Strategic Plan. This plan represents a single department effort to work together to provide programs, polices and projects that create a better future for Sauk County residents. Department reports reflect our commitment and achievements in meeting plan goals.

The Land Resources & Environment Department's Land Conservation Services Division provides technical and financial assistance for the installation of conservation practices that improve farm productivity while protecting land and water resources.  The Land Conservation Division is tasked with permitting, inspections and enforcement of Sauk County Chapter 26 Agricultural Performance Standards and Manure Management Ordinance. Outreach and education programs offered by the Land Conservation Division include pasture walks, field days and workshops, Ag Plastics Recycling and Clean Sweep, Youth Conservation Education, Annual Tree Sale, and the biennial Conservation Chronicle Newsletter.

The Land Resources and Environment Department’s Parks and Recreation Division provides oversight and management of all the County’s recreational amenities and open spaces for our residents and visitors. The park system exemplifies our cultural identity and embraces a natural legacy for future generals to come.

The Land Resources & Environment Department's Planning Division, provides professional planning services for the county's rural and urban communities from conception and planning stages through implementation. Planning provides communities with long-range, recreational, agricultural, and preservation planning services with a focus on innovation to advance planning in individual communities, which collectively improves all of Sauk County.

LAND

The Land Resources & Environment Department's Zoning Services Division provides technical information and assistance to the public, town officials and county board supervisors.   The Zoning Division is tasked with permitting, inspections and enforcement of the ordinances the department administers.  These ordinances include:  Zoning, Shoreland Protection, Floodplain, Rural Identification System, Nonmetallic Mining Reclamation, and Private Onsite Waste Water Treatment Systems Ordinance.

Great Sauk State Trail logo

The construction of the Great Sauk State Trail began in 2017, utilizing the rails to trails program, it is located in the former right-of-way of the Union pacific rail corridor. The currently 11.4 mile trail parallels the Wisconsin River through the communities of Prairie du Sac and Sauk City, and into the Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views as they pass through historic Towns, and Wisconsin River valley on this ADA accessible trail paved with asphalt.
