Sauk County Library Board
May 8, 2018, 9:00 a.m.
Wernicke called the meeting to order and verified compliance with the open meeting law at 9:00.
Morford moved and Andreessen seconded to adopt the agenda. Passed unanimously.
Wernicke moved to amend last month’s minutes to change the wording from stroke to struck. Andreessen moved and Morford seconded to approve the minutes with the correction. Passed unanimously.
SCLS report- Marty Van Pelt gave her report:
Craig Braunschweig, a county board member, has been appointed to the Sauk County Library Board and the South Central Library Board.
All library directors will be able to attend South Central training and meeting to discuss the budget, their technology agreement, databases, DPI library policies, website training, reports and Workforce Development staff training.
Review Library Service Plan 2016-2020: Kucher explained the plan includes a requirement for signed library contracts from the libraries with the county for provision of library services. This is not a requirement of the state, but the state does require equitable service. Kucher will follow up with the county and SCLS to clarify. To be discussed at the next meeting. Morford moved and Heidenreich seconded to table. Passes unanimously.
2019 Budget Discussion:
Review output performance measures information from annual reports. Discussion included number of programs and attendees, meeting room use, and total items checked out.
2019 County Reimbursement Funding Proposal:
Funding proposal discussion concerned county reimbursement funding for Sauk County libraries and the Wisconsin Dells reimbursement for providing services and programs in Lake Delton. Reedsburg’s costs for support services will be considered next year.Technology funding and how to disburse to be decided at next meeting.Delivery will increase charges by 1%.
Formation of budget subcommittee:
Wernicke moved and Heidenreich seconded to ask all county library board members to meet early at 8:30 before the next scheduled meeting, in Reedsburg on July 10, to discuss and approve the proposed 2019 county library budget. Motion passed unanimously.

Spring Green: Portz reported on Children’s programs
* Beginner sewing series
* Pokémon Terrarium craft for St. Patrick’s day
* Regular monthly anime night & Pokémon trainers event
* Storytime attendance increasing, 30+
* Gearing up for SLP – more literacy and learning focused, less entertainment
o Random acts of kindness, crafternoons, drum circles
o Fewer big performers – Colossal Fossils, Zoozort, Magic & Music program – Tim Glander
Spring Break at the Library
* Dress up like a tropical vacation – had special events all week – movies, stuffed animal sleepovers, crafternoons

* Mini-food jewelry (avocado earrings) out of polymer clay
* “Cheeseheads” documentary screening with filmmaker, John Mitchell
* “Around the Farm Table” host Inga Witscher, cooking demo of smorgastrata
* DWD regular monthly office hour visits
* Hoo’s Woods Raptor Center bringing 4 raptors on Sat. – tie in to 4th annual Bird Festival
Wisconsin Dells: Borck reported on their partnership with the historical society and Friends to sponsor an author and immigration debate, their baseball essay contest, June 8-9 booksale, summer programs, ESL classes and digitization of historical oral tapes.
Baraboo: Bergin reported this is her 3rd week as director in Baraboo. She reported on their building project, Friends book sale, summer school visits, music and performers.

Recent Program Highlights
* Children’s Day Program on 4/27 had approximately 200 attendees. Sharon Yildez and her famous Circus Dogs, Dash and Copper performed. They’ve also been on the Steve Harvey Show, America’s Funniest People and The American Kennel Club National Championship in addition to having modeled for Halmark cards.
* Robots Program on Wednesday 4/18: School-Age Children built robots in 3 stations: 1 out of recycled cans, magnets and mostly magnetic bits (tied in with Earth Day), one edible robot and 1 out of an electric toothbrush stuffed in a pool noodle with markers taped on. They worked and kids had fun turning them on and letting them draw. The other two robots were with kits we own: Gyrobots and Ozobots.
* Storytime Petting Zoo: We're had a Petting Zoo in storytime for "Z" week Tuesday, May 1 at 10:30 a.m. Children could meet LIVE baby animals from Leatherberry Acres after storytime.
Upcoming:
* Fairy Gardens & Gnome Homes (5/12/18) – For children ages 5 years and up to participate along with parent/adult.
* Reptile Inspired Engineering (5/16/18 at 2:30 PM) - Madison Area Herpetological Society presents Reptile Inspired Engineering at the library Wednesday, May 16 at 2:30 p.m. Examine how traits and characteristics reptiles have developed are inspiring development of new technologies and research that benefits the society we live in. (Grades K-5)
* "Cheeseheads" Documentary Screening (5/15/18 at 5:30 PM) Filmmaker and writer John Mitchell will join us for a screening of his documentary Cheeseheads at the library Tuesday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. This film is a love letter to Wisconsin and the Midwest, a humorous and informative travel movie. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. (For Adults)
* Friends of the Library Book Sale – Friday May 18 from 9-5 and Saturday, May 19
Sauk City: Judd reported:
Hoopla-We started the digital service Hoopla for downloadable movies, music, e-books and audiobooks in January. Our stats have been going up over each of the last several months and we’ve received a lot of positive comments.
Taxi Rides-The Food Pantry reports that people are excited to receive the tickets to the library. Though few people have spoken to us about using the tickets, the taxi service says that they get used regularly.

Rock Springs: Schofield reported-
* Katie just finished the first course toward becoming certified as a public librarian.
* Rock Springs Library will receive a Sauk County Arts & Humanities grant to help fund Summer Music Programming. Classes include Sound Recording 101, Kids Rock Camp, Make a Musical Instrument, Dance, and more.
* Rock Springs Library is partnering with the Sauk County Master Gardeners who will be managing the community garden space across from the library. They will plant and maintain a variety of tomato plants and offer educational programming around that topic.
* The Library and the Rock Springs History Committee are working with Tamara Ramski, the Digitization Specialist at the South Central Library System to digitize historic photos and documents.
