Asphalt Paver Scam

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn the public of a Scam going on in the local area. We have had reports of a group of Asphalt Pavers in the area of rural Sauk County going door to door stating that they ordered too much Asphalt for a job and are now willing to make a deal and pave the victims driveway for a very reduced price. No contract is provided. The initial person then leaves and a short time later a group of workers show up and start paving the driveway. There is no prep work and there is no gravel placed down as a bed for the Asphalt. When the Asphalt is then laid it is only one to two inches in depth. After completion of the work, the original person returns to the victim and states that they had to put down more Asphalt than expected and it is going to cost up to three times the amount originally discussed. Usually a deal is then struck between the victim and the Pavers when the victims report being “intimidated” by the Pavers to pay the amount they are requesting.

Pavers or contractors need to provide a written contract for the work to be done. If none is provided or offered and the “deal” sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you have any of these people show up at your residence, ask for identification and documentation. Also ask for references. Legitimate Paving companies will gladly comply.

In Sauk County at this time, two victims have reported that they have been involved in the above. At this time the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating these incidents and is asking for any assistance in apprehending these individuals. If you have information to give, please call the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office at 1-800-377-1195 or Sauk County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-TIP-SAUK (1-888-847-7285)
