Criminal Damage / Burglary - Merrimac Area

In the early morning hours of 12/11/2024 the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office received a request from the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office to check the welfare of a male subject, who was possibly traveling to the Merrimac Area.  Ultimately Deputies located the male, identified as Roman Tomal IV, near the Ferry landing in the Village of Merrimac.  It was discovered the Tomal had intentionally submerged a vehicle in Lake Wisconsin.  Later that morning, and in the following days, the Sheriff’s Office received numerous reports of property damage, believed to be cause by Tomal, throughout the Merrimac Area.  Additionally, it is believed the Tomal forced entry into an unoccupied residence on Idlewild Road, caused extensive damage, and attempted to start the residence on fire.  Tomal was armed with a shotgun during this incident and the residence was struck by gunfire.  Numerous criminal charges, including attempted arson to a dwelling, armed burglary, criminal damage to property, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person will be forwarded to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.
