Devil's Lake Homicide - Request for Information

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the October 2020 murder of John Schmutzer at Devils Lake State Park south of Baraboo, WI.

During the course of this investigation, hundreds of leads and tips have been investigated, and those efforts continue to this day.

Investigators have made every effort to contact everyone who provided a tip either via a direct phone call to our agency, on our Crime Stoppers tip line, emailed or texted.

There have been some people who provided information that we have been unable to re-contact to obtain clarifying or additional information.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is committed to continuing this investigation to a resolution that identifies the person responsible for this crime and brings justice to John and the Schmutzer family, and we need the help of those who have relevant information to do so.
