Drowning Incident

On July 21, 2017 at approximately 10:30am the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible drowning in a swimming pond at a local campground in the Town of Merrimac.  It was reported that a 12 year old boy had disappeared under the water and witnesses were unable to find him.    Sheriff’s Deputies, Devils Lake State Park Rangers, Sauk Prairie Ambulance and Merrimac First Responders were immediately sent to the scene.

Upon the arrival of Responders, the boy was located by witnesses and pulled from the water and CPR was initiated.  Sauk Prairie Ambulance requested assistance from Baraboo Ambulance Paramedics and UW Hospital Med Flight was requested to the scene.  The juvenile was transported by Sauk Prairie Ambulance to UW Hospital in Madison.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 12 year old Chicago IL boy was playing in the swimming pond with friends and family members.   It was reported that the boy was unable to swim and he wandered out into deeper water.  It is estimated that the boy was submerged for approximately 10 minutes before he was located by witnesses and removed from the water.

The juveniles name is not being released and his condition is unknown at this time.
