Fatal Crash STH 113 - 5/16/2017

On Tuesday, May 16th, 2017, Sauk County Dispatch received notification of a two vehicle crash with injuries on STH 113 near Steinke Road in the Township of Greenfield. Sauk County Sheriff’s Deputies, Baraboo Fire and Baraboo District Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene.

First Responding firefighters from the Baraboo Fire Department arrived on scene and advised one vehicle was overturned and a person was trapped. Med-Flight from University Hospital in Madison was called to the area of the crash for transport of that patient.

Initial investigation indicates that a 2009 Acura driven by Christopher S. Shanks of Baraboo, WI was northbound on STH 113 negotiating a curve, crossed the centerline and struck a 1988 Chevrolet truck driven by Lester Gaffney of Merrimac, WI that was traveling southbound, causing the truck to overturn onto its roof.

Shanks was treated by Baraboo Ambulance Service, declined transport to the hospital, but was later treated at and released from SSM Health St. Claire in Baraboo. Gaffney was transported to U.W. Hospital in Madison for his injuries. Gaffney died in the hospital Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained in the crash.

This crash remains under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
