Fatal Traffic Accident - *****Updated Victim Name Released****

The bicyclist killed as a result of this incident has been identified as David M. Curto, age 65 of rural Merrimac.

On July 14, 2022 at 1250 P.M., the Sauk County Communications Center received a call for a traffic accident involving a vehicle vs bicycle on STH 78 near Goette Rd in the Merrimac Township.  Preliminary reports indicate a bicyclist was eastbound on STH 78 and lost control veering into the westbound lane in front of a westbound vehicle.  The vehicle collided with the bicycle.  The operator of the bicycle sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Sauk County Coroner.  The operator of the westbound vehicle was not injured. At this time, names are being withheld pending notification of the family.  This incident remains under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department.  Merrimac Fire and Rescue, Sauk Prairie EMS and Sauk County Highway Department assisted the Sheriff’s Department at the scene.
