Hit and Run Fatality - Update / Arrest

Nachreiner

On Monday, June 20, 2022 at approximately 10:30 PM, The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an overdue bicyclist in the Town of Troy in Sauk County. While checking the area, a Sauk County Deputy located the bicyclist, who had been struck by a vehicle on CTH B east of Cassel Road, in the ditch. The victim died from injuries sustained in the crash, initiating a hit and run investigation.

On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at about 2:00 pm the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office received a phone call from an attorney who relayed that a client of theirs had been driving in the area of CTH B and STH 60 at the time of the crash and believed that they struck a deer. The Sheriff’s Office was provided the name and location of both the suspect and vehicle involved but would offer no additional information as to the circumstances prior to, during or after the crash.

Sauk County Sheriff’s Detectives obtained a search warrant for the named address, went to that location, served the search warrant during which examined the vehicle involved in the crash and found the damage to be consistent with striking a person/bicycle rather than a deer. The suspect, Patrick J. Nachreiner, age 62 of Plain, WI., was placed under arrest for Hit and Run Causing Death and seized the vehicle. The suspect was transported to the Sauk County Jail.

The vehicle, a white full-size van with “Carrier” and “Nachreiner Plumbing and Heating” on each side and the back, was transported and secured for additional investigation and examination.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is continuing our investigation into this crash, specifically the activity of the suspect and vehicle prior to the crash. Attached to this press release are photos of the suspect and the vehicle involved in the crash. We ask the public to recall whether they saw either the suspect or vehicle on Monday, June 20, from the early afternoon until about 8:30 PM, and if so, to call Sauk County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-TIP-SAUK (1-888-847-7285) with the time, location and what you observed. Callers can remain anonymous.

The suspect, Patrick J. Nachreiner, remains in the Sauk County Jail awaiting a bail hearing.
