K-9 Apprehension

December 27, 2012 at approximately 12:30am Sauk County Sheriff’s Deputies and Officers from the Baraboo Police Department were sent to a residence in the Village of West Baraboo for a report of a burglary in progress. It was reported that the homeowner heard his window to his attached garage break. He went outside to investigate and found that the window was broken by a board and there were foot prints in the snow around the area.
The Sauk County K-9 unit was sent to the area and began a track of the suspect, later identified as Henry Michael Chase, age 22, of Baraboo, WI. Chase was tracked to the wooded area near the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo campus where he was confronted by Deputies and a foot chase ensued. Chase refused to comply to orders from the Deputies and the K-9 was deployed. The K-9 took Chase to the ground and held him until Deputies could take him into custody.
Chase was taken into custody and transported to St. Clare Hospital for treatment of bite injuries sustained from the K-9 unit. He was later incarcerated in the Sauk County Jail and charged with Attempted Burglary, Criminal Damage to Property, Resisting an Officer, and Possession of THC.
Sheriff Chip Meister commends the actions of K-9 Cooper, his handler Deputy Matt Burch, and the other Deputies and Officers involved in this incident. This felony suspect was successfully taken into custody, with minimal injuries, due to the training and actions of this K-9 team. Cooper is a dual purpose K-9 which means that he is trained to sniff narcotics as well as track and locate people and objects and apprehend suspects. The purchase of Cooper and the training that he and Deputy Burch received were funded by citizen donations.
