NEWS RELEASE

OWI 5TH OFFENSE ARREST

On September 22, 2017 at approximately 9:51 p.m., a Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Deputy conducted a traffic stop for a speed violation on STH 23 near Coon Bluff Road in the Town of Excelsior.  The vehicle operator was Roland H. Wedekind, age 78, of Madison, WI.  The Deputy observed signs of impairment.  Wedekind refused to participate in field sobriety tests.  A preliminary breath test showed an alcohol concentration greater than permitted by law.  Wedekind has 4 prior convictions for Operating While Intoxicated.  Wedekind was arrested and incarcerated at the Sauk County Jail.  The charge of Operating While Intoxicated 5th Offense will be referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

The Deputy who conducted the traffic stop was participating in a traffic enforcement detail funded through a grant provided by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.  The grant allows additional Deputy staffing focused on obtaining traffic law compliance and driver education with the goal of increasing roadway safety in Sauk County.
