News Release

On November 17, 2017 at 8:10pm the Sauk County Communications Center received a call regarding a small child walking in the roadway on CTH T in the Town of Fairfield.  It was reported that the child had possibly been left behind by a vehicle that left the scene.

Deputies responded to the scene and discovered a 4 year old female with minor injuries.  A short time later a disturbance was reported in the Village of West Baraboo involving a truck that had been involved in a crash.

After an initial investigation it was determined that a truck transporting 1 year old twins, (in child safety restraints), and a 4 year old, (no child safety restraint but wearing a seatbelt), and operated by Alex L. Shultis, age 25 of Baraboo, was traveling north on CTH T.  As it approached the curve at the intersection with Levee Road it entered the ditch and overturned, ejecting the 4 year old.  The truck came to rest on its wheels and was able to drive out of the ditch and head west on CTH T toward Baraboo.  The 4 year old ran behind the truck for a distance before being assisted by local residents.  Shultis continued on to West Baraboo where he was located by law enforcement.  Local residents there were attempting to assist the twins, who had remained in the truck in their child safety restraints throughout the incident.  Both twins and the 4 year old were transported to St. Clare Hospital by Baraboo Ambulance.  Alex Shultis was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

Causing Injury While Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence with a Passenger Under 16 Years of Age (3 counts)
Open Intoxicants in Motor Vehicle – Driver
Violation of Child Safety Restraint Requirements – Child 4-8 years old
Inattentive Driving
Failure to Keep Vehicle Under Control
Failure to Notify Police of an Accident
Child Neglect – Bodily Harm (3 counts)
First Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety (3 counts)

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Baraboo Police Department and Baraboo Ambulance.
