PLANE CRASH - BARABOO - WISCONSIN DELLS REGIONAL AIRPORT

On July 22, 2021 at approximately 7:10 p.m., the Sauk County Communications Center was notified of a plane crash at the Baraboo-Wisconsin Dells Regional Airport located along County Highway BD in the Town of Delton.  The initial reporter indicated the pilot was exiting the plane which had come to rest upside down.  Emergency responders from the Sauk County Sheriff's Office, Baraboo District Ambulance Service, and Baraboo Fire Departments were immediately sent to the scene.

The initial investigation shows that a 67 year-old man from Steamboat Springs, Colorado was piloting a 1941 Boeing-Stearman Model 75 / PT-17 single-engine biplane.  As the plane approached to land on a grass airstrip on the north side of the airport, the landing gear struck a chain link fence on the west side of the property during the descent.  The plane then flipped coming to rest with the top of the upper wings on the ground.  The pilot and only occupant was not injured and was able to safely exit the plane.  The plane sustained moderate damage.

The Sauk County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Baraboo Fire Department, Delton Fire Department, Baraboo District Ambulance Service, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) staff, Baraboo-Wisconsin Dells Airport management, and Blystone's Towing.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FAA will continue the investigation in an attempt to determine any causal factors involved in this plane crash.
