May 5, 2020

On Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at about 3:53 pm, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a suspicious male prowling around closed businesses in the 400 block of Linn Street in the Village of West Baraboo.

Upon arrival in the area, responding deputies located the male who in turn ran away from the deputies.  They were able to identify him by past contacts as Christopher J. Denman, age 38, of Portage.  Denman was wanted on felony warrants from both Sauk and Columbia Counties.

Denman attempted to evade arrest by fleeing into the Baraboo River.  Officers were eventually able to surround Denman from shore and deployed a Sheriff’s Office patrol boat and K9.  Denman was successfully negotiated out of the river at about 4:48 pm and was taken into custody without further incident.

Denman was transported to the Sauk County Jail following routine medical clearance at the hospital and booked on the felony warrants as well as new charges of Resisting Arrest and Felony Bail Jumping.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Baraboo Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin State Patrol, Baraboo Fire Department, and Baraboo District Ambulance Service.
