Sheriff's Promotions

June 11, 2014

With the recent retirement of Chief Deputy Kevin Fults, Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister announces the promotion of Jeff Spencer to Chief Deputy of the Sauk County Sheriff's Office.  Jeff is currently the Department Captain, a position he has held since 2011.

Spencer began with the department in January of 1989 as a dispatcher after completing his Police Science degree.  In May of 1989 he was promoted to a Deputy working in the jail.  In 1991, he became a full-time patrol deputy.  In 1995, he started as a Detective and then in 1999 was promoted to Patrol Sergeant.  In 2003 he became a Lieutenant and then Captain in 2011.

In 1993 Spencer joined the Emergency Response Team and became Commander of that team in 2004.

Spencer completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development School and the University of Wisconsin's Certified Public Manager curriculum as well as many other executive training courses.

As Captain, Spencer oversaw various divisions including patrol, detective, dispatch, court security, jail, and was the Emergency Response Team Commander.  As Chief Deputy, he will be the administrative officer of the entire Sauk County Sheriff's Office.

Spencer has been with the department a considerable amount of time, and he's worked in all of the divisions that he will be overseeing.  His knowledge and experience will benefit the department greatly.

With the promotion of Jeff Spencer to Chief Deputy, Sheriff Meister has promoted current Detective Lieutenant Mike Stoddard to Department Captain to oversee the operations of the Department.  Mike has been with the Department since 1987 and has worked in the Jail, Patrol, and Detective divisions throughout his career.  Mike has been in a Sergeant or Lieutenant position for the past 14 years in both the patrol and detective divisions.  Mike was the first K9 officer for the Department.  Mike has also been a part of several special teams within the Department to include the dive team and ERT Team.

Mike has been the commander/leader for the Dive Team and the Drug Task Force.  As Captain, Mike will also become the Commander in charge of the Emergency Response Team.
