Shooting Incident

On June 29, 2020 at approximately 3:45am the Sauk County Communications Center received a 911 call from a residence in the Village of North Freedom.  The caller was reporting that someone was shooting at their home.  While Dispatchers were obtaining information, the caller reported that a suspect had gained entry into their home and gunfire was being exchanged between the home owner and the suspect.

Deputies arrived and found numerous windows shot out of the home.  The suspect had shot his way through a patio door to gain entry.  Deputies found the suspect on the ground suffering from numerous gunshot wounds.  Deputies also located the two residents of the home inside and they were not injured.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the 37 year old son of the residents arrived and started shooting the windows out of the home in an attempt to gain entry.  Both parents retreated to the basement of the home as the suspect made entry.  The suspect fired numerous rounds inside the home causing him to have to reload.  As the suspect proceeded down a hallway to the basement entry, one of the parents, now armed with a firearm, fired back at the suspect striking him several times.

The suspect was transported to UW Hospital in Madison by Med-Flight Helicopter for treatment of his injuries.  He remains in critical condition.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Reedsburg Police, Wisconsin State Patrol, North Freedom Fire and First Responders, Reedsburg Ambulance, and the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office.

This incident remains under investigation.
