Media Release

April 5, 2013

On the evening of April 4, 2013, Chief Tim Becker from the Reedsburg Police Department contacted me to advise me that his agency was conducting a criminal investigation, and as a result, is criminally charging a Sauk County Jail Deputy for incidents that occurred while the Deputy was off duty in the City of Reedsburg.  Reedsburg Police Department identified the Deputy as Kyle Garstka.  I was advised that he is being charged with two Counts of Engaging in Repeated Acts of Sexual Assault of a Child.

Upon notification, I immediately placed Mr. Garstka on Administrative Leave and my Office is conducting an internal investigation.  This action is standard procedure in an incident such as this.  Kyle Garstka is a ten year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office.

In 2009 Garstka was involved in a domestic incident.  The Reedsburg Police Department investigated and Garstka entered in to a deferred prosecution agreement with the Juneau County District Attorney’s Office  Garstka successfully completed the terms of this agreement and the charge was dismissed on November 4, 2010.  In 2011 Garstka was involved in another disturbance.  This incident was investigated by the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office and the Juneau County District Attorney’s Office.  No charges were filed against Garstka as a result of this incident.

At this point I am unable to comment on the on-going criminal investigation being conducted by the Reedsburg Police Department.   Once our internal investigation is complete, I assure you, proper discipline will be taken.
