Special News Release
07/08/12

On July 8, 2012 at 6:53AM, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department responded to a motor vehicle accident in the Village of West Baraboo on West Pine Street. STEPHEN A. HANSEN, age 67 of Waunakee, was operating a motor scooter and was slowing to make a turn into McDonald’s restaurant when a vehicle operated by JAMES K. MCVEIGH, age 18 of Plain, collided with the motor scooter from behind. McVeigh’s vehicle pushed Hansen’s scooter 127 feet before coming to rest.

Hansen was treated at the scene for head and internal injuries by the Baraboo Ambulance and transported to University Hospital in Madison by Med Flight helicopter. Hansen was wearing a helmet.

McVeigh, who was not injured in the accident, stated that he had fallen asleep just prior to the accident and did not see Hansen prior to the collision.

The accident is still under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department and it is believed that inattentive driving by McVeigh was the main cause of the accident.
