US Hwy 12 OWI Crash
 
On January 12, 2018 at approximately 9:51 pm the Sauk County Communications Center was notified of a single vehicle traffic accident on US HWY 12 near Old Bluff Trail in the township of Sumpter. The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, Sauk Prairie Ambulance Service, Baraboo Ambulance, Sauk City Fire Department and UW Med Flight Helicoptor responded to the incident.

Upon arrival, Deputies located a 2012 Honda Accord in a wooded area near the intersection of US Hwy 12 and Old Bluff Trail. The initial investigation shows the vehicle, operated by Puneet Kumar Sharma, age 20, of Madison, was traveling southbound on US Hwy 12 at a very high rate of speed.. Upon failing to negotiate a curve, the vehicle entered the ditch and became airborne before striking several trees and coming to rest on its wheels. Two juvenile female passengers, age 13 and age 15,  were injured and required transport.  The 13 year old was transported to Sauk Prairie Hospital with non life threatening injuries.  The 15 year old was transported to UW Hospital by UW Medflight Helicoptor with serious injuries.  Sharma was arrested and charged with Causing Injury While Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence with a Passenger Under 16 Years of Age.
 
Speed and Alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. This crash remains under investigation by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office.
