ILS 275: The U.S. in Vietnam: Music, Media and Mayhem
Instructors Craig Werner and Doug Bradley
3 credits (2 lectures with 1 discussion)
Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:00-3:15 PM
@Soils 270 on the UW-Madison campus

"The U.S. in Vietnam: Music, Media and Mayhem" places both the soldier's experience in Vietnam and the extraordinary music of the 1960s at the center of a conversation about the culture and events of the war in Vietnam and the Vietnam era. Novels, non-fiction, poetry, films, journalism, images and guest lecturers bring an abundance of viewpoints and perspectives. Over the course of the semester, students will engage several Vietnam veterans in addition to lecturer Doug Bradley and will also benefit from the military experiences of TAs Wyl Schuth, who served in Iraq, and Anthony Black, a veteran of both the Army and Marines. Each class session begins and ends with a song which has particular, and sometimes surprising, meaning to Vietnam veterans while they were in Vietnam and when they returned home.

The following comments were offered by recent auditors of ILS 275:

"ILS 275 was an incredible experience . . . Most importantly the class expanded my appreciation for the experiences of soldiers tremendously."
- 40 year-old special student/auditor

"This is hands down the best class I've ever taken. I just wish it had been offered when I was an undergraduate!
- 63 year-old auditor

"Even though I was auditing the course, I felt connected to the other students, the teachers and the class itself. And I appreciated being able to add my voice and perspective on the turbulent Vietnam era I grew up in."
- 60 year-old auditor
