The data showed that on a single night in January 2023, there were 35,574 Veterans who experienced homelessness in the U.S. This reflects a 7.4% increase in the number of Veterans experiencing homelessness from 2022.

  • 22 percent are chronically homeless individuals (or people with disabilities who have experienced long-term or repeated incidents of homelessness)
  • 6 percent are veterans (distinguished due to their service to the country), and
  • 5 percent are unaccompanied youth under 25 (considered vulnerable due to their age)
  • On a given night, the homeless services system provides shelter for 348,630 people. Despite these significant efforts, 40 percent of people experiencing homelessness live unsheltered, which means their primary nighttime residence is a place not suitable for human habitation (for example, a city sidewalk, vehicle, abandoned building, or park). Significantly, living unsheltered can impact a person’s health and safety.

Nearly a fifth (16.6%) of military and veteran families are facing this challenge — skipping meals, choosing between buying food or paying rent, and leaning on food pantries for support when times are particularly tough.

Twenty percent of households that are supported by Feeding America include a veteran or someone that has served in the military. In fact, 27 percent of veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have struggled to provide food for their families.
