OLDER AMERICANS/ADRC MONTH ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR MAY

BARABOO, WISCONSIN; April 24, 2015 -- The Sauk County Health Department and the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Eagle Country – Baraboo/Sauk County will participate in the national observance of Older Americans Month and the state observance of Aging & Disability Resource Center Month in May with a series of events scheduled at public libraries throughout Sauk County.

Lighthearted movies from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as refreshments, will be offered at 2:00 p.m. at the Reedsburg Public Library, 370 Vine Street, on Wednesday, May 6; Ruth Culver Community Library, 540 Water Street in Prairie du Sac on Friday, May 22; Spring Green Community Library, 230 East Monroe Street, on Tuesday, May 26; and Baraboo Public Library, 230 Fourth Avenue, on Friday, May 29.

This year’s Older Americans Month theme celebrates activity, wellness and inclusivity of older Americans by encouraging them to “Get into the Act.”

This year’s Older Americans Month also coincides with the 50th anniversary of the ratification of the federal Older Americans Act.  The Older Americans Act, which was signed into law in July 1965, provides a nationwide aging services network and funding to help older adults live with dignity in the communities of their choice for as long as possible. In Sauk County, the Aging & Disability Resource Center and the Health Department coordinate the county’s Older Americans Act programs, including congregate dining centers, home-delivered meals, prevention classes, a caregiver program, home and community services, and elder benefit specialists.

“We decided to have fun with the ‘Get into the Act’ theme this year and observe the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act at the same time by creating movie-theme events throughout the county,” explained event organizer Cassidy Walsh, Health Educator for the Sauk County Health Department. “We are in the process of selecting a movie from 50 years ago as part of our celebration at each library. We invite everyone to get into the act by joining us for a fun time as we celebrate our county’s vital older Americans.”

Information about Sauk County’s Older Americans Act programs, as well as numerous giveaway items, will be provided at each of the events.
