2011 Camp Scholarship Recipients

Each year the Sauk County Land Conservation Committee and Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department offer scholarships to area youth to attend two camps.

The following students were awarded scholarships to attend the Wisconsin Land and Water Conservation Camp at Trail’s End Youth Camp near Ladysmith in Rusk County: Haley Bonilla, daughter of Shannon and Ignacio Bonilla, a junior at Baraboo High School; David Reifsteck, son of Dennis and Alberta Reifsteck, an eighth grader; Marco Reifsteck, son of Dennis and Alberta Reifsteck, a ninth grader.

The following students were awarded scholarships to attend the Sand Lake Conservation Camp near Crivitz in Marinette County: Kimberley Helm-Quest, daughter of Bill and Peggy Helm-Quest, an eighth grader at Sauk Prairie Middle School; Samantha Kreutzmann, daughter of John and Teresa Kreutzmann, an eighth grader at Sauk Prairie Middle School; Jared Mack, son of Keith and Angela Mack, a seventh grader at Sauk Prairie Middle School; Abby Rothering, daughter of Noah and Mary Ann Rothering, an eighth grader at Weston School. These Sauk County students joined around 80 other middle schoolers from 18 different counties and one from the Upper Peninsula.

These camps provide youth with positive outdoor educational experiences, help them better appreciate and understand nature, and introduce them to the variety of opportunities in natural resources and conservation careers. Professionals present programs on topics such as wildlife, soils, erosion, ecosystems, and aquatic habitats. Conservation camps also offer unique opportunities to make new friends from around the state and enjoy hiking, swimming, canoeing, and camping.

Scholarships included registrations, meals, and lodging. Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Education Coordinator Penny Pohle said, “It is important to encourage youth to be involved with conservation and connect with nature. These camps offer wonderful opportunities for them to learn about the environment and to enjoy the great outdoors.” For more information about this program, please contact the Conservation, Planning, and Zoning Department at 355-3245.
