Merrimac Ferry

To check the status of the fair call 511 or visit Merrimac Ferry (Colsac III) website.

The Merrimac Ferry was begun to create a part of the route between Baraboo and Madison. It began as Matt's Ferry in the 1840's. In 1900 a gasoline engine was added for power replacing the horses that pulled the ropes. The ferry was replaced by a new and bigger one in 1924 and another one in 2002, both named the Colsac, for the two counties it joined, Columbia and Sauk.

The ferry has always operated free to passengers and supplies. It runs 24 hours a day from April to December. It has become a tourist attraction transporting passengers since it is the only Free Ferry in the state of Wisconsin.
