Man Mound State Park

The Man Mound, Greenfield Township, Sauk County

Among its archeological artifacts Sauk County is particularly proud of its "collection" of Indian mounds.

The history of mound building by Native Americans if obscure. There are various theories regarding the purpose or use of the mounds by their builders, a consensus being that the mounds served religious or ceremonial rites.

In Sauk County perhaps the most representative mound is that of a man, located in Section 28, Township of Greenfield, on a road appropriately named "Man Mound". Mounds in the human form are extremely rare, and though Man Mound is no longer intact, the majority of the figure can be seen by visiting the site in the county park, also named Man Mound.
