Q:  How many CO detectors do I need in my lodging establishment?

A:  There are many parts to consider with the new carbon monoxide detector location requirements.  Several documents are attached on this page to help with this new requirement.

In short, a CO detector shall be provided to each sleeping area with a fuel burning appliance (FBA) as well as the room(s) which hold the fuel burning appliance.  New law requires that CO detectors in rooms with FBAs are placed on the ceiling instead of the wall.

Q:  Can the licensee on my lodging facility be a management company?

A:  The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has identified that management companies cannot hold the license.  Management companies do not have by-laws and therefore cannot declare responsibility for death, injury, and illness as well as compliance with ATCP 72.  Below is a document regarding this.  Any individually owned or operated rental house or condo unit that is NOT part of a condo association, will have to hold the license under the individual owners name.

Q:  I want to rent my home to tourists.  Does this require a license?

A:  Yes, all short-term rentals require a Tourist Rooming House license.  A pre-inspection will need to be conducted at the home in order to license it for rental.  The cost of the pre-inspection is $190, which is a one-time fee.  The cost of the license annually is $190.
