Recreation and Education Camps

Recreational and Education Camps, also known as Rec-Ed Camps, are operated as overnight living quarters where both food and lodging, or facilities for food and lodging, are provided for children or adults, or both children and adults, for a planned program of recreation or education, and that is offered free of charge or for payment of a fee by a person or by the state or local unit of government.

Rec-Ed Camps typically provide activities for guests of the camp that include things such as high ropes, archery, and zip lines.  In addition, they are typically located on waterfront to provide easy access for water activities for guests of the camp.

All Rec-Ed Camps provide food which is typically served cafeteria style. The highest risk of illness or injury at a Rec-Ed Camp is from food service.  Environmental Health inspects these camps during food preparation and service to ensure practices and procedures are observed and issues are corrected.

The food facility at the Rec-Ed Camp will need to go through the plan review process.  This is the process of submitting documentation of the design, plans, equipment, menu, and procedures of the food facility.  An Environmental Health Specialist will review the documentation and approve/deny the plan review.  The cost of plan review is $100.  For more information, please see the Plan Review Guidelines document located at the bottom of this page.

Once the plan review is complete, you will need to schedule the pre-inspection with the inspector who conducted the plan review.  You will need to fill out and provide a Sauk County License Application with applicable fees to the inspector at the time of the pre-inspection.  The application is available at the bottom of this page.
