Baraboo Youth Receive “Tickets” for Wearing a Helmet While Biking

(Baraboo, WI) Riding a bike is one of the best ways to enjoy the summer. Not only is it a great form of exercise, but it is also a fun activity to do with friends and family. Safe Kids Sauk County is working with local law enforcement to encourage people to wear a helmet when bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, and scootering.

If a staff member from the Baraboo Fire/EMS or Police Department sees your children wearing their helmets while biking, skateboarding, rollerblading, or scootering, they may get “pulled over” and given a “ticket” for a free scoop of custard. Thank you to Culvers for donating to this program.

Wearing a properly fitted helmet is one way to stay safe while biking, but it is not the only step a person should take before going for a ride. Before you bike, remember to:

  • Use hand signals. Extend your left arm out straight from your side for a left turn and your right arm straight out from your side for a right turn.
  • Wear bright colors and use lights. Reflectors on your clothes and bike will help you be visible, especially at night and in the morning.
  • Ride together. Ride your bike with your child until you are confident that they are ready to ride on their own.
