National Drug Take Back Day

Save a Life: Dispose of your unused medications

The next Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, October 28, 2023.

National Drug Take Back Day events are twice a year: on the 4th Saturday in April and October.

Clean-out your medicine cabinet today. Lock up the medications that you need. Then drop off your unused medications on National Drug Take Back Day or see below to find a permanent drop box location near you.

More than 70% of people who abuse prescription painkillers get them through friends or relatives — sometimes by accident.

Unused or expired drugs in your home are a danger to loved ones. Prescription painkillers are especially deadly. More than 42% of teens who misused or abused a prescription drug found it in their parents’ medicine cabinet. Why wait for an accident to happen? Instead, safely dispose of medications (even opioids) at hundreds of locations throughout Wisconsin, all year round. No questions asked.

WHAT TO BRING to Take-Back

Prescription (controlled and non-controlled) and over the counter medications, ointments, inhalers, patches, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vape cartridges and devices (with batteries removed) vials and pet medications.

For solid medication: remove the medication from its container and dispose of it directly into a disposal box or into a clear sealable plastic bag. You do not need to remove the medication from a blister package-- you can dispose of the blister package as is. We do not collect plastic pill containers.

For liquids, creams and sprays: these must be in their original packaging. Liquids without the original packaging will not be accepted.

WHAT NOT TO BRING to Take-Back

Please don't bring illegal drugs (such as marijuana, methamphetamine, heroin, etc.) needles/sharps, mercury thermometers, aerosol cans, biohazardous materials (anything containing a bodily fluid or blood), flares, personal care products (shampoo, soaps, lotions, sunscreens, etc.), household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, chemicals, oil, or gas), acids or any vape devices containing batteries of any kind.
