Most people will recover on their own. However, treatments for respiratory viruses can lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick. They also may reduce the risk of complications, including those that can result in hospitalization, especially for people with risk factors for severe illness.

Taking pain or fever medications (NEVER give aspirin to children)

Using a room humidifier or taking a hot shower to help ease a sore throat and cough

Drinking plenty of liquids to stay hydrated

Staying home and resting

Antiviral drugs

These may be prescribed by your doctor to make the illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also help to prevent serious complications, depending on the illness. Antiviral drugs are not antibiotics and work best when they are started within two days of getting sick. Being seen by a healthcare provider early in your illness can help to prevent severe illness.

If you are concerned about your symptoms, contact your health care provider.
